God vs. Hurt
Matthew 4:23-5:12
23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. 24 News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and he healed them. 25 Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.
Introduction to the Sermon on the Mount
5 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.
The Beatitudes
He said:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
In the records of court trials in Richmond, VA, Trial #761 253 is a case between Mary Green God & David & Eva Hurt. The gist of the trial is this: Mary Green God had a piece of land she wanted to sell, & David & Eva Hurt wanted to buy it.
They agreed upon a price & the transaction was finalized only to find, after the money was paid, that Mary Green God did not have clear title to the property. So David & Eva Hurt took Mary Green God to court.
What caught my attention was the title of the trial as listed in the court records. Court case #761 253 is entitled, "God vs. Hurt."
As I read that I wondered if there is anybody in Trumbull-Mahoning-Columbiana County area named "God." So I searched online & looked for someone named "God." I didn't find anybody.
I did find in search, the name of Miltant C. God, in Akron, OH I thought to myself why would any parent with the last name of God name their son Militant. Then I looked for "Hurt" & found 13 people in our area There are a lot of families whose last name describes the way many people feel much of the time.
A. "God Vs. Hurt" I think that's an interesting theme for a sermon. There is a lot of pain & suffering. Yet the Bible tells us over & over again that there is only one God.
B. God is sufficient. Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
C. God wants to help us Psalm 37:40 “And the LORD shall help them and deliver them; He shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in Him.”
Now if you are interested in knowing the outcome of that case. The court in Virginia ruled in favor of the Hurt family. It was, however appealed and taken to a higher power, the Supreme court in Virginia, who overturned the original verdict thus finding in the favor of God in 1976.
How can you ever lose a court case when your last name is God?
But in all seriousness…we must, as believers and children of God be confident that we will never be defeated by hurt…ever!
