A Solid Foundation
Matthew 7:21-27
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
Do you catch yourself sometimes just going duh!!!! When you see certain things on TV like the reality shows like love it or list it or House Hunters where they always seem to find problems after they have on budgets etc.
But the biggest problem I have is when I hear people talking about shows like the bachelor where at the end of all the debauchery experienced over a 6 week period of time one stranger asks another stranger to marry them. After a combined 28 seasons of the both the bachelor and bachelorette how are the 28 couples doing?
5 are still together while 18 for some inexplicable reason are not… as his words drip with sarcasm.
What happened? Nothing!!!!
Nothing ever went into it. There is absolutely no solid foundation to any of these relationships. It’s like building a mansion on a foundation of Styrofoam. Once it starts to crumble there is no turning back.
What are some unique characteristics about a foundation?
1. It is the focal point during times of stress
2. When it is solid, there are no worries
3. When it is solid others want theirs to be like yours
4. Any situation worsens quickly when the foundation is weak
5. You have to know what materials are the strongest to get the best results
6. You have to have the right contractor
Just as in construction we need to have the right foundation. None of these relationships started off right nor are they likely to end well.
We also need to protect our structure (soul, heart mind) with the backing of God’s word. Because we are in a war I Peter 5:8 8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Ephesians 6: 10-18
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
A solid foundation keeps the saint secured!
